sports injuries

Sports injuries encompass any injuries that occur during an athletic activity. These injuries are diverse and plentiful, however, some of the more common ones include:

  • Knee injuries (including ACL tears)
  • Shin splints
  • Sprains
  • Muscle strains

It is important to receive immediate attention after a sports injury. Letting an injury go can result in permanent damage to the affected area. If you are unsure of whether or not you have a sports injury, look for the following symptoms:

  • Sudden and severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Inability to place weight on the leg, knee, ankle, or foot
  • Tenderness in the arm, elbow, wrist, hand, or fingers
  • Extreme weakness in the arms or legs
  • A bone or joint that is visually out of place

Symptoms of chronic injuries include:

  • Pain when you participate in athletics
  • Pain when you exercise
  • A dull ache even when resting
  • Obvious swelling

When coming in for treatment, our physical therapists will first assess your injury and its severity. From there, we will create a timeline of your treatment plan. Some injuries may require surgery in addition to physical therapy.

Physical examinations will allow our physical therapists to take note of how your body moves and to take into account the nature of your injury so that they can create a customized treatment plan for you. Typical treatment plans use manual therapy to increase your range of motion, strengthening exercises to enhance the injured area, and stretching to improve balance and mobility. These are all done to help you recover after your sports injury and to prevent further injury from occurring in the future.
